The Municipality of Bluewater has a number of committees that members of the community may participate in. Involvement with our committees is a great way for local residents to volunteer in our community and learn about key municipal issues and initiatives.
The Communities in Bloom and Environmental Committee is a committee of Council. The mandate of the Communities in Bloom and Environmental Committee is to:
- To provide guidance and make recommendations to Council on matters related to the Environment.
- Promote environmental awareness.
- Foster civic pride and environmental responsibility through community participation.
- Enhancement green spaces in its communities.
- Discuss new or changing environmental legislation or regulations.
- Research new and relevant environmental issues.
The Committee meets quarterly in-person at the Stanley Complex, 38594 Mill Road, Varna. Agendas are posted to our Council Portal ahead of the meeting.

The Heritage Advisory Committee is a Committee of Council with statutory duties set out by the Ontario Heritage Act. Its volunteer members and Member of Council serve the whole community when they provide advice to Council on changes to designated heritage properties and properties within the Bayfield Heritage Conservation District.
The Bluewater Heritage Advisory Committee meets every other month on the second Tuesday at 7 p.m. Please visit the Municipal Calendar for agendas and minutes.

The Heritage Advisory Committee is a committee of Council with statutory duties set out by the Ontario Heritage Act. The Committee meets on the second Tuesday of every other month at 7 p.m. Meetings are electronic on Zoom. One meeting is conducted in person in the spring.
Learning Opportunities
Apply if you are a first-time volunteer or have years of experience. Learn more about local government. Engage with local government to provide advice from a citizen’s perspective. The mandate is to advise and assist Council about matters relating to designated properties. Most heritage permits were delegated by Council to staff. In Bayfield, there is a group of designated commercial properties. Together, they form a Heritage Conservation District. There is a designated residential property at 1 Anne Street in Bayfield. There is a designated community facility at 108 King Street in Hensall. Members can encourage heritage conservation with property owners across the Municipality of Bluewater. The municipality provides members with an opportunity to attend the Ontario Heritage Conference. The conference brings industry professionals, municipal staff and volunteers together to share knowledge.

Information related to applicants’ experience and suitability as a candidate will be presented to the respective committee and Council as part of selecting committee members. However, personal/sensitive information will be kept confidential.
What to Expect After You Apply
Once your application is received, you will be invited to speak with a three-member nominations committee. The subcommittee will recommend one candidate for appointment to the Heritage Advisory Committee.
Anticipated Appointment Date
The Heritage Advisory Committee will consider appointment of eligible candidates at a regularly scheduled meeting and submit a recommendation for appointment to Council. The successful candidate will be contacted prior to passing of the appointment by-law. The length of term for members of the Heritage Advisory Committee is four years from the date of passing of the appointment by-law.
